What is A36 Steel?

A36 is a widely used carbon steel grade valued for its balance of strength, ductility, and weldability. Commonly specified for structural and fabrication applications, A36 steel provides predictable mechanical performance and ease of processing across a broad range of use cases.

A36 Steel Composition

A36 steel is a low-carbon structural steel defined by ASTM A36 chemical requirements. Its composition is designed to balance strength, weldability, and formability for structural and general fabrication use.

A36 steel is composed of:

  • Carbon: up to ~0.25–0.29% (depending on thickness), supporting strength while maintaining weldability

  • Manganese: to improve strength and toughness

  • Phosphorus and sulfur: kept at low levels to reduce brittleness and improve fabrication performance

  • Iron: balance

This controlled metallurgical chemistry is what allows A36 steel to meet structural requirements while remaining easy to cut, form, and weld in the field.

Key Properties of A36 Steel

A36 Yield and Tensile Strength

A36 steel offers standardized mechanical performance that makes it well-suited for structural and load-bearing applications, including:

  • Minimum yield strength of approximately 36,000 psi

  • Reliable performance under structural loading conditions

  • Typical tensile strength ranging from 58,000 to 80,000 psi

  • Consistent ultimate strength across common bar sizes

These properties make A36 a dependable choice for applications like beams, plates, bars, and fabricated components.

A36 Steel Hardness

A36 steel has a relatively low hardness consistent with its low-carbon composition. In practice, A36 typically falls in the range of approximately 120–160 Brinell hardness, depending on section size and processing history.

This moderate hardness contributes to good machinability, ease of cutting, and weldability, making A36 well-suited for fabrication and structural applications where extreme wear resistance is not required.

A36 Steel Density

A36 steel has a density of approximately 0.284 lb/in³ (or 7.85 g/cm³), which is consistent with standard carbon steels.
