Quenched/Tempered

The first step in the quench and temper process is to heat the bar to a uniform temperature above the austenitic transformation temperature. The hot metal is then quenched in a liquid, usually oil or water. The rapid cooling transforms a portion of the material to a martensitic microstructure, imparting a high degree of hardness. In the as-quenched state, the steel bars are too brittle to be used. Additional heat treating in the form of a temper cycle is performed at a lower temperature to reduce the hardness and restore ductility. The final surface hardness achieved in this process is dependent on the chemical content of the steel. The chemistry also dictates the hardening depth and the ultimate mechanical properties that can be expected.

With long standing relationships with several processors capable of having material quenched and tempered, Jade Sterling Steel is able to offer some of the most competitive pricing and delivery available. Jade Sterling Steel stocks a wide range of diameters and grades available to have quenched and tempered to specific customer specifications depending on the end application.

Common sizes that we supply in quenched and tempered bars range from 5/8″ up to 16″ rounds. The most common grade we supply in quenched and tempered bar is 4140, although we do supply a variety of other grades. We can also offer these bars in a variety of lengths.

With four major warehouse located in Cleveland and Chicago, as well as a full time in house logistics department, Jade Sterling Steel is able to provide quenched and tempered bar to customers all over the country. In the course of having material quenched and tempered, the bars may undergo some distortion. Straightening is a process whereby material is loaded into a straightener to achieve a desired level of straightness. Jade Sterling Steel can have bars straightened in a timely manner at a competitive price. With several customers using similar sizes and grades of quenched and tempered bars, we are able to carry a large inventory of these products for quick delivery as and when needed.

Whether you’re in need of a singe bundle, a full truckload or even a rail car of quenched and tempered bars, let Jade Sterling Steel go to work filling your requirements.
